"Project N 31 Soichi Yamaguchi" Exhibition
This event has ended.
At Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery
Media: Painting
Soichi Yamaguchi's painting "Mai-mai Shigure" won the grand prize at Geisai #9 in 2006, when the artist was still a sophomore at Tokyo National University of Fine Arts & Music. Psychedelic color usage and a symmetrical Rorschach-like composition are his trademarks.

ショッキングな色合い+隠れているエロさに軽いショックを受ける作品群。好みではないのに無理矢理惹きつけられる。。
I thought the artist would be a religious disciple of the Super Flat manifesto like attempting to show the feeling of merging layers, make the viewer’s eyes move on the surface and squeeze the images of Japanese old master pieces with vague reasons.
(I actually found that he was the winner of Geisai.)
His paintings are well done as if he has asked approvals for each element like colors or trendy symmetry or whatever. And it would be fun that children with the wallpaper printed his paintings would develop their visual sensation differently.
But his paintings remind me art prep students who are dexterous but need teacher’s approval. They are nice but timid.
