Albert Anker, the 19th century Swiss naturalist painter (1831-1910), has been loved by the Swiss people as a national artist, and his works grace the collections of many museums. Although the Swiss-born Anker lived in Paris for 30 years, he continued to paint images of people and every day life in the villages of his home country. Even now his works hold a fond place in the hearts of the Swiss, and the scenes he painted contain a spirit that compliments the Japanese sense of olden times and evoke an atmosphere of human warmth. This exhibition features some 100 of Anker's works, composed mainly of his oil paintings and including sketches as well. This retrospective exhibition is the first major exhibition introducing this artist's paintings in Japan. It was organized by Bunkamura and, with cooperation of Kunstmuseum Bern, will include works borrowed from museums and collectors within Switzerland for shows in four venues in Japan.
