"Crafts in Life 18: Laughing Ebisu - Studies in God of Happiness" Exhibition

Musashino Art University Museum & Library
Finished
Ebisu is the well-known god of happiness from the Seven Deities of Good Luck. Among the seven deities, Ebisu is the only one that evolved out of ancient Japanese culture. This exhibition introduces the history of Ebisu, at the same time looking into the origin of Japanese spiritual culture. Through the museum collection of clay figurines and paintings and other resources, the exhibition unravels how the imagery of Ebisu has been formed over the years. The exhibition also introduces "Ebisu-mawashi," which is supposedly the original form of the traditional puppet show, Ningyo-jyoruri.
