Gohokuson is an agricultural village in central Kouchi Prefecture with a population of 3,200. There are virtually no jobs available locally, and the community is aging and depopulated. Since there are so few twenty year olds to participate in the traditional Coming of Age ceremonies, the villagers have been celebrating "tensai" (ten year olds) since 1996. 12 years have passed since this photographer moved to this village to document it, and he has been recording the "tensai" celebration on film annually. This year, the first "tensai" children turned twenty years old, the year to participate in the Coming of Age ritual. Although the group promised to get rephotographed ten years later, the photographer found that most of the original group had left the village. In the end after much searching, he was able to photograph 46 out of the 53 original children (1 deceased, 2 whereabouts unknown, 4 declined) at the heights of their adolescence. 100 black-and-white photographs are on display.
