William Forsythe was born in the US, in 1949 in New York State. In 1973 he traveled to Europe where he joined the Stuttgart Ballet. In 1984, he began his tenure as Director of the Frankfurt Ballet where he created many of the most celebrated dance theatre works of our time. After the closure of the Frankfurt Ballet in 2004, Forsythe established his own company, the Forsythe Company.

In recent years, in addition to receiving commissions from architect Daniel Libeskind and the City of Paris among others to create architecture/performance installations, he has produced numerous video installations and films. His diverse artistic activities continue to transcend any one genre or medium.
