poster for Shimabuku "New Works"

This event has ended.

Currently based in Berlin, Shimabuku has concentrated on site-specific projects and performances since the early 1990s, exhibiting at various locations all around the world.
He visits places, uncovers anecdotes that seem to have been forgotten by the locals, trying to seek out the particular possibilities of that place, and creates works out of these elements that sometimes even involve the local animals.

This exhibition features Shimabuku's trademark poetic sense of humor in works like "Shimabuku's Fish and Chips" (2006) and "Dawn in Artsonje" (2007), both of which hint at new possibilities for communication and propose new values for living in peace. In addition, new works created with the Watari-um in mind will be on display.

Shimabuku makes use of a wide variety of media to "try things he never intended to do": sports-related works, hands-on interactive pieces, video and sound works, photography and text, most of which have not yet been exhibited in Japan. This exhibition will no doubt pose pertinent questions about the future forms that art will take, as well as provide visitors with smiles and new engaging experiences.

Closed December 31st (Wed) through January 3rd (Sat)

Opening Reception on 2008-12-12 from 18:00
