"Flower and Doll from the Museum Collection" Exhibition
This event has ended.
At Crafts Gallery at the National Museum of Modern Art
Media: Crafts
Many contemporary craft artists create works depicting the beauty of nature. This exhibition presents around 60 masterpieces with flowers as the main motif. Many styles are represented, such as Iro-e and Maki-e (bowls decorated with patterns), Yuzen (textiles), Tsui-tate (screens), and others. Works created by Meiji era masters Soubei Kinkozan and Kouzan Miyakawa as well as works by contemporary artists, whose style is often a mixture of traditional and modern techniques, are on display.
In addition, this exhibition also presents dolls created by Japanese and foreign artists. Unique styles of contemporary doll making have been developed over generations. Artists such as Yumeji Takehisa and Bunro Gomi took the lead in this field, developing original styles extending from the traditional practice, while Goyo Hirata, Ryujo Hori and other artists continued within the tradition. Furthermore, artists such as Isao Hama, Akimitsu Tomonaga, Shimon Yotsuya, and Kazuyo Noguchi began to explore possibilities of craft in a more sculptural manner, creating a new field in craft. In addition to 27 dolls created by significant Japanese artists, dolls created in other parts of the world are presented.
