Exhibition I: Modern European Craft and Design: Centering on Art Deco
The Crafts Gallery at the National Museum of Modern Art has built up a collection of historically significant modern design works and has held a number of shows devoted to this theme. This exhibition showcases Art Deco posters and other works in three parts, as follows.
--1. From Art Nouveau to Art Deco
Featuring Art Nouveau artists Alfons Maria Mucha, René Lalique, and others, as well as Japanese artists such as Kozan Miyakawa, Kenkichi Tomimoto, and Goyo Hashiguchi.
--2. Art Deco Era Part I, Glory of Art Deco
Ornate posters from the 1910's to the 1930's by A.M. Cassandre, Paul Colin and others.
--3. Art Deco Era Part II, Influence on Japan
During the recovery period after the Great Kanto earthquake, Art Deco was adopted by many young artists who were searching for a new form of expression. Crafts by Toyochika Takamura and Akira Isoya, posters by Hisui Sugiura, landscapes by Kiyoshi Hasegawa and Kazuma Oda, and many other works are on display.
Exhibition II. New Acquisitions 2006–2007
This part of the exhibition presents a total of 35 new acquisitions, centering on Koheiji Miura's ceramic works.
