Ilya Kabakov "Illustrated Encyclopedia of the World"
Closes in 15 days
At Ashikaga Museum of Art
Media: Illustration, Other, Art Talk
Ilya Kabakov (1933-) is an internationally-acclaimed contemporary artist. Born in Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine, Kabkov made a living as a children's book illustrator under a regime that prohibited free expression through art, working as an "unofficial" artist.
These original illustrations have been conserved by Kabakov himself and have not been previously exhibited. This exhibition presents a total of over 1000 illustrations and 100 picture books for the first time, divided into five large sections - life, science and industry, stories, poetry, etc - as well as an "Osha and Friends" corner, exhibited over two periods (up until August 17th/from August 20th onward).
Kabakov's picture books cover diverse territory, and, as the title of this exhibition indicates, collectively possess the character of a sort of global encyclopedia. The world is complex and riddled with contradictions. Kabakov's picture books take this into account and are themselves complicated creations, filled with a sense of beauty and nostalgia.
