Batik is a dyeing technique that uses wax to create complex textile patterns. Mainly originating from Indonesia, it encompasses a wide range of styles influenced by local Indonesian culture and history. Batik is a national Indonesian art form which reflects the country's diverse cultural background, consisting of 300 distinct native ethnicities.
This exhibition, which celebrates 50 years of diplomatic relations between Japan and Indonesia, features around 400 works from the collection of researcher and educator Masakatsu Tozu. The culture of Indonesia will be reflected through the various traditional Batik prints, as well as other works created by contemporary artists.
