Japan enjoys something of a reputation as an international Mecca for ceramics. In postwar Japan, ceramicists used traditional techniques as a base while exploring original ways of working with materials, forging ahead as pioneers of new pottery techniques. The reasons behind that motivation were many -- new stimuli coming from the art world, historical aspirations and yearnings to pottery cultivated over the years, and a genuine sense of respect and questing in terms of materials.
Japanese ceramics have come to occupy a very respected position even abroad, with many Japanese artists winning accolades at international competitions. In recent years, museums in America and France have even organized exhibitions of contemporary Japanese pottery and ceramics, charming audiences with their unique, somehow "oriental" flavor. Japanese potters have long been engaged in mining and questioning the rhythmic potential and malleability of clay, creating highly original works with a variety of forms and functions.
This exhibition showcases representative work from Japanese female potters that straddle tradition and newness, landscape and emotion, conducting at times even a kind of dialogue or exchange with the clay itself. Through an appreciation of these works, perhaps we can reclaim some of what has been forgotten about notions of traditional Japanese beauty in our globalized information age, while learning something of the possible future development and innovation of this traditional craft.
