This solo exhibition features the work of Natsunosuke Mise, a nihonga painter born in the 1970s who is today one of the most recognized practitioners of the medium. Mise was born and raised in Nara, and attended the Kyoto University of Art, where he also completed his graduated studies. After winning the grand prize at the Triennale Toyohashi in 2002, he exhibited widely both in Japan and abroad and had his work purchased by the Ministry for Cultural Affairs, attracting critical acclaim not just from nihonga painting circles, but from the art world as a whole. The year before last, Mise spent one year in Italy, and last year he participated in the artist residency program at the Ohara Art Museum.

Mise's oeuvre and artistic trajectory can be roughly divided into three phases. The first consisted of work that used rust as an expressive texture, and landscapes of mountains and other natural features that made liberal use of gold leaf. Currently, Mise mainly produces large-scale works in black and white using sumi ink. His work, although not exactly disqualifiable as nihonga based on his use of gold leaf and sumi ink on washi paper, nonetheless positions itself at a significant distance from all existing examples of the genre.

This exhibition showcases Mise's most recent works gathered in one place, inspired by his artistic explorations undertaken during his stay in Italy and since his return to Japan.
