“Buena Onda”: The Puros Habanos 1st Anniversary Celebration
This event has ended.
NishiAzabu, Tokyo (August 1, 2008): Born in Cuba, singer/guitarist Alexander Laborde Padron has been performing professionally from the age of 21, and his prolific career has taken him throughout Europe and Asia. Based in Tokyo since 2004, last year Alexander assembled some of the hottest Latin-music talent in the city to form the band 'Puros Habanos,' and the group's distinct and diverse Cuban sound immediately earned them a devoted following of Latin-music enthusiasts across the Kanto area and beyond. Over the past year the band has packed live houses and salsa bars from Roppongi to Yokohama, filling the dance floor without fail show after show.
On September 5th, as the group celebrates their 1st Anniversary, Alexander decided to switch things up a bit. "For our first anniversary, we wanted to try a different venue and different vibe," he explains. "Puros Habanos has both Cuban and Japanese musicians so we wanted to emphasize the mix of Cuban and Japanese art and culture for this celebration. We have some special guests coming out to help us create live art, live dance, and live music, taking this event beyond the traditional salsa dance party. And SuperDeluxe is the perfect place to make it all happen."
Puros Habanos will be joined for one set by the live-art group Rinpa Eshidan who will create art-in-action to the band’s unique Cuban sound. Since their debut in 2006, Rinpa has performed at clubs across Tokyo dozens of times, but never to a live Latin-music set. Yayi and Popi of the famed Narciso Medina Dance Company of Cuba will also be on hand to deliver an exuberant dance performance that promises to delight the seasoned salsa crowd and Latin-music newcomers alike.
