This event has ended.

Tokyo Gallery + BTAP is pleased to hold Stanley Donwood’s solo exhibition ‘I LOVE THE MODERN WORLD’ from April 2nd through April 29th. The exhibition will include three series of artworks, including of screenprints, etched copper plates, etchings and mix media paintings.

‘London Views’ is a series of gold block-foil limited edition screenprints. The artwork was painstakingly carved into linoleum by Donwood with one small cutting tool. Each beautifully executed panel depicts an apocalyptic vision of London, viewed in panorama from the Thames and showing iconic structures including Big Ben, Canary Wharf, and the dome of St. Paul’s Cathedral. All is not right in Donwood’s London. The city is aflame, buildings collide with each other beneath a blanket of cloud. Gargantuan waves breach the Thames Flood Barrier, and the ensuing tsunami swamps the city, with landmarks like the Swiss Re Building and the Millennium Dome sinking, burning into the flood.

The themes explored in the ‘London Views’ linoprints and screenprints have also been explored in a series of long panoramic prints made with Japanese kozo washi paper. Kozo washi is made with a 900 year old technique that processes the long, tough fibres of the kozo tree into a durable paper that absorbs ink easily and is ideal for large scale printing of this kind.
Donwood has also produced a series of ten photographic etchings inspired by his fascination with suburbia – its causes, effects and long-term outlook. The result is a portrayal of what the artist terms “a kind of supersuburbia”; in his works an almost congregation-like type of housing that clusters worshipfully around huge, blank, anonymous mall-structures. Housing appears to bow down before commerce, citizens have been transformed into consumers. The artist points out that consumption, after all, is the old name for tuberculosis, which leaves us coughing blood before dying.

‘Puffer’ the third series of work to be exhibited circumscribes several emotions that Donwood loosely terms phobias, fears and anxieties; or possibly allergies.

This will be Stanley Donwood’s first exhibition in Japan, and the second British artist to be introduced by Tokyo Gallery + BTAP this year, coinciding with UK – Japan 2008. We hope you will take this opportunity to see Stanley Donwood’s work.

One huge fan of civilization

Given that Radiohead, and Stanley Donwood along with them, are probably the pre-eminent chroniclers of urban malaise in our pre-to-postmillenial times, it's good to see that a happy, mentally healthy individual is the artist behind the dark, edgy images that grace those covers ...
