At Ikeda Museum of 20th Century Art
Media: Painting

Moving to Italy at the age of 20, Takao Ono studied painting conservation and worked on many masterpieces such as works by Giotto and Tiziano from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. During his stay in Italy, he also created portrait paintings using black as main color.
This retrospective exhibition focuses on Ono's works created between 1993 and 2007. A total of 62 works are on view, presenting Ono's sophisticated and detailed techniques learned from the classical paintings he encountered. His work challenges the notion of portrait painting today, and his realistic and yet surreal paintings define today's representational painting.
