Henri Riviere "36 Views of the Eiffel Tower"
This event has ended.
At New Otani Art Museum
Media: Prints, Art Talk
Paris-born Riviere's first encounter with Japonisme was at the Montmartre cafe Chat Noir, where artists, cultural figures and avant-garde intellectuals would come and go, engaging in social criticism and political discussions. Chat Noir also became a place where artists could show their newest work. Members at the time included Toulouse-Lautrec, George Auriol and Theophile Steinlen. Riviere's own important place in art history may be chalked up to his efforts in developing the medium of multi-colored lithography and the revival of woodblock printing. He performed enthusiastic research on Japanese art, learning much from the use of color, composition, subject, and expression of ukiyo-e by Hokusai and Hiroshige.
In addition to a display of the "36 Views of the Eiffel Tower", this exhibition also features George Auriol, who produced the cover and binding for this work. Also coinciding with the title and on display is Hokusai's "36 Views of Tomitake".
