Emi Kodama's ceramic works measure about 40-50 cm across, and are studded with countless 1cm depressions tinged with blue, stuck onto the sides of these rock or cave-like chunks that sometimes also have saucer-like fragments attached to them. The works look like underwater marine organisms with a verdant streak of bluish-green to them, while certain pieces have a kind of white clay that encroaches upon the glaze from below. Pieces made out of red clay have the appearance of budding plants in fertile soil.
This exhibition, Kodama's first solo show, also sees her tackling white porcelain for the first time. Her works reflect the steady warmth of sunshine and the sparkling translucency of the ocean, calling to mind seaweed, coral and shellfish.
