Daido Moriyama + Miguel Rio Branco Exhibition

Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo
Finished

Artists

Daido Moriyama, Miguel Rio Branco
This exhibition by Daido Moriyama and Magnum photographer Miguel Rio Branco is part of a program of events scheduled to commemorate the year of Japan-Brazil exchange and the 100th anniversary of Japanese immigration to Brazil. Both Moriyama and Rio Branco have in common a photographic practice that captures urban landscapes and the people who live within them, each inflected with their individual worldview. For this exhibition, Moriyama shot Sao Paulo, while Rio Branco photographed Tokyo, resulting in an intriguing intersection of two cultures and viewpoints, as well as previously unseen portraits of both cities. Fragments of the everyday that are typically overlooked are transfigured into scenery pregnant with meaning, posing questions about the nature of contemporary reality.
