Yurakucho Station on the JR Yamanote Line is a gateway to the Ginza, Marunouchi and Hibiya areas. In the past, it used to serve as the entrance to the headquarters of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.
Yurakucho took its name from Yurakusai Oda (military commander Nobunaga Oda's brother), whose residence was located in the area. Frank Nagai's hit song "Let's Meet in Yurakucho" also helped to make this venerable place well known throughout Japan.
Drastic changes in the landscape of Yurakucho started with the construction of expressways and the demolition of the Sukiyabashi Bridge in the area. Since then, the area has undergone further changes, such as the closing of old streets that used to be full of eateries and watering holes, and the construction of new buildings. Then, just recently, what was left of good-ol' Yurakucho (2-7-8 Yurakucho in particular) got transformed into a huge shopping building.
On view at this exhibition are photographs of the newly-constructed Yurakucho, where various types of people keep coming and going throughout the day.
