Ryohei Koiso (1903-88) is widely known as one of the most significant modern Japanese painters. His talent was discovered at an early stage in his career. Through his studies in France, he was exposed to many styles of Western painting, and was able to examine its traditions at length. When he returned to Japan, he studied with Takeji Fujishima at Tokyo University of the Arts, befriending talented painters like Takanori Ogisu and Genichiro Inoguma. The foundation of his art practice was developed through his experiences in such inspiring environments.
Many of the masterpieces Koiso created depict sophisticated female figures or a group of people, a world uniquely his own inspired by European painting traditions. His works are highly acclaimed even today, acknowledged as a benchmark for the definition of beauty in modern Japanese painting.
With the support of Kobe City Koiso Memorial Museum of Art, this exhibition presents about 30 paintings, drawings, and prints by Koiso, including his major works such as "Dancer," "Two Female Nudes," and "Working Man." This year marks the 20th anniversary of his death with this retrospective exhibition, aiming to introduce the whole spectrum of his aesthetic.
