This event has ended.

The Japan Media Arts Festival has been held every year for the past 12 years in order to encourage talent in multimedia. This year, 2146 submissions from 44 countries around the world were received in the fields of art, entertainment, animation and manga. This exhibition presents 147 award-winning works chosen from all submissions.

The recipient of the grand prize in the art category is an interactive graphic work entitled "Oups!". In the entertainment category, the electronic instrument "Tenori-On" by Toshio Iwai was selected for the award. The winner for the animation category was "House of Blocks," a tale of an old man who lives alone in a sinking town, while "Forest of Pianos", a story about a talented, free-spirited boy who aims to become a pianist, won in the manga category.

The achievement award was given to Fujiko Nakaya, an artist who has been active since the 1960s, hosting a number of video galleries and open-call exhibitions.

Crossing borders between established and typical genres, many of this year's prize-winning works deal with the physical aspects of human beings, appealing not only to our visual, but also auditory and tactile sensibilities.

今回もいろんな作品があって面白かったです。インタラクティブなもの、直観的なものが多いのが興味深く感じました。時間には余裕を持ってみた方がいいと思います。

Don't miss it, it's only once a year. The layout of the exhibition is much better than last year's; more of a journey than a huge open space. Take some time to sit through the animation shorts, at the back of the space... Count an hour to walk around and another to watch some of the animations.
And don't forget to grab the exhibition book at the exit. ¥1,000. It's bilingual (even though their sign doesn't say so...)
I really enjoyed the House Of Blocks and the Inkan race animations.

Glad I managed to catch the last day of this. Took my 11-year-old daughter along and there was plenty there that caught her interest. I think her favorite part was the group fishing game that you could control by keitai. Only downside was that it was super crowded. Partly a consequence of it being free, I guess. Anyway, definitely catch this next year when it rolls back around.
