Mitsuya Nakamura was born the oldest son to Yuzen living national treasure Katsuma Nakamura. After completing a course in nihonga at Tokyo Bijutsu Gakko, he learnt dyeing from his father and made his debut as a dyeing artist after the war. Initially, Nakamura sought his own mode of expression using Roketsu dye, but eventually he returned to Yuzen, and moved to the west coast of the Miura Peninsula in 1984, making numerous works based on the harbor landscapes of Sajima and Nagai.
