Nerhol is an artist unit composed of Yoshihisa Tanaka, who "kneads" ideas, and Ryuta Iida, who "sculpts" them. Taking as their theme assemblages and accumulations of words and letters (such as books and magazines), Nerhol carves and sculpts these books and publications, stripping them of their initial identity as reading material and pointing out the inherent value of such objects, including their visual properties. Their works brim with a creative will that feels both delicate and meticulous yet majestic at the same time. While making viewers more sensible to an "existence that eludes grasp", Nerhol alerts us to the potential and existential value of familiar objects beyond what their actual condition and perceivable reality would suggest.
This exhibition features Nerhol's representative work, "Oratorical Type", a new typeface created by accumulating a set of carved books, each of which is itself an assemblage of words. Also on display is Source Magazine More, a publication assembling various visual elements and information that expresses in visual terms the human desire and hunger for information over and above the strictly necessary. In addition to these innovative experimental works, custom orders for these "visual books" will also be taken and put up for sale. Also held over the duration of the exhibition are various workshops that deal with the beauty of verbal forms and words.
The collaborative work between these two artists is a search for the sublime, an effort to deepen the concepts behind their art, and an experiment in opening up new possibilities for artistic expression. This is Nerhol's first solo exhibition and a first foray into future possibilities and forms of expression.
