Kotaro Matsui's exhibition, "anon. diary," is an installation predominantly composed of photos and drawings, which are combined with objects. At first glance, his drawings look as if nothing has been depicted. But on closer view, one notices that minute textures have been created on the entire surface. People who step into his installation begin to follow the images that convey transient, lucid impressions, and end up being drawn into Matsui's unique world.
In his work, Matsui throws modest but acute doubts toward what images generally convey to people. One such idea that Matsui questions is why a second-hand documentary film that accurately reproduces an incident, or a story that has been produced with a specific aim, is not as persuasive as the few spoken words of a person who actually experienced the incident on the spot? This might be because when we see the exact images of an occurrence, we tend to abandon dealing directly with or deeply understanding the situation. We possess a strange, groundless sense of relief that derives from feeling content with the exact images that are there before us; thus, we decide that there is no need to delve into the matter any further. In contrast to the superficial impression of his work, substantial questions are manifested from the background of Matsui's installation, which he subtly but firmly constructs. His work leads us to realize the necessity of carefully gazing at the fragments of realities that are buried deep within images.
