For Matsumoto, festivals in Japan feel little different from everyday life. Perhaps because the original atmosphere of these festivals has thinned over the years and become a part of that everyday, or perhaps Matsumoto's own relationship to festivals is only that of a mere onlooker, but whatever the case, the artist fails to be moved by these Japanese "matsuri."
Walking around with camera in hand, Matsumoto encountered contemporary matsuri being held in perfectly ordinary places whose landscapes seem to be found everywhere. Meeting people with "everyday" behavior, and visitors to these festivals who were not dressed in any special costumes for the occasion, blending into the crowd of actors dressed up in costumes, Matsumoto began slowly to lose the feeling of awkwardness and unnaturalness he used to associate with these festivals.
This exhibition explores the world of contemporary Japanese matsuri through over 40 color photographs.
