Yukichi Kouge Exhibition
This event has ended.
At Wako Hall
Media: Painting, Digital
Inspired by Cézanne, Yukichi Kouge decided to become a painter when he was a child. Later, he moved to France and stayed there for 40 years, expressing his appreciation for southern French landscapes through painting just like Cézanne. Landscape painting is his primary style of expression, first making numerous watercolor paintings as sketches and later completing a painting in his studio.
Kouge came back to Japan four years ago. He noted that the weather of his hometown, Shodo Island, is similar to that of Province. One of his paintings depicting scenery around his studio, entitled "Olive Forest and Uchinomi Bay," is reminiscent of somewhere in southern Europe. The paintings mysteriously invite viewers to experience the warmth of the sun, the cool air in the shade of a tree, the natural scent of soil, and a sense of contentment. At this solo exhibition, the landscape paintings he completed after his return will be presented for the first time in Japan, as well as landscape paintings of Spain and France, and some still life paintings.
