When Someya was a child, he was taken along on a holiday trip sponsored by his mother's company. Although he has forgotten where they went, he still remembers the stifling humidity of that late summer, the feel of wearing a yukata for the first time, and how different the adults all looked from their usual appearance.
The town where they vacationed was a hot spring resort, with narrow streets and mountains in the background that seemed to closer than they were. The fact that such a place could evoke some inexplicable nostalgia or longing even in a child was a source of some unease for Someya. A slender mountain stream flowing past the back of the hotel, countless mayflies hovering listlessly in the setting sun, dusk that came too soon, the sky that turned a pale violet - all these were keen sensations etched in his memory.
Now an adult, Someya has taken to visiting such hot spring towns and walking through them. With their somewhat worn and tired appearance, the sorrowful charm of these towns still makes the artist's heart stir. This exhibition features around 50 monochrome photos that spell out Someya's feelings towards these hot spring towns.
