Mexico is filled with a joy of life. Even death, "muerte," is considered as an "amigo." Sustainable lifestyle is rooted in their culture. For example, they use maguey, the ingredient of tequila, and nopal cactus for both eating and clothing, fully utilizing a single life form in every aspect of their lives.

Artist Tamana Araki became captivated by the lifestyle of Mexico. She creates works using local plants and natural dye found in Mexico, and also collaborates with the local people. While her works convey the inner strength which is derived from the power of Mexican culture, they are also sentimental and poetic.

This exhibition presents a total of 27 works by Araki, including "El Ombligo dela Luna" (The Belly Button of the Moon), a piece incorporating motifs of local plants and animals as well as daily items from Mexico, and works created at workshops she held in elementary schools in Mexico and Setagaya.

This exhibition also includes craft items, prints and books from Lenateros Studio in Chiapas, Mexico. These items were appreciated and collected by painter Kojin Toneyama (1921-94), who also was influenced greatly by Mexican culture. A Mexican food workshop and paper craft workshop will also be held.
