Oscar Oiwa
Born in 1965 in Sao Paolo to second-generation immigrants to Brazil, Oscar Oiwa is an artist who depicts imaginary worlds with a rich narrative element and generous humor. Growing up equally familiar with manga comics, art and magazines, Oiwa studied architecture at university while taking his first steps towards producing art. He participated in the 21st Sao Paolo Biennale in 1991, and immediately afterwards shifted to be based first in Tokyo (1991-2002), and then New York, where he currently lives and works. Oiwa continues to make work closely linked to his varied experiences in all the cities he has lived in, including a number of public art commissions, sculpture and large-scale painting. His landscapes seem to hold the key to understanding, by extrapolation, how cities work, even though they originate from the vision and perspective of a single urban dweller.
This exhibition stems from the vision of a single artist living in an era of border crossings, showcasing works from his early Sao Paolo period to more recent pieces produced while in New York - about 70 works in total. Always taking the place where he lives as a starting point, posing questions about nature and society and their relationship to each other, this collection of unique work stands as a poignant social mirror of our times.

In commemoration of this Oscar Oiwa exhibition, a screening of the legendary movie "Clearing Up, Clouding Over", by six members of the "Showa 40s Association" - Hiroyuki Matsukage, Makoto Aida, Oscar Oiwa, Tsuyoshi Ozawa, Kinoshita Parco and Sumihisa Arima, will be held, along with a talk event.
