"Through a Panel Darkly" This exhibition shows a unique part of Swedish comic strip art that, in word and image, carries on the heritage of August Strindberg and Ingmar Bergman. Black and white, full of darkness and anguish, they are, at the same time, as funny as only a comic can be...

Since its founding in 1979, the magazine Galago has published practically all of the Swedish creators of modern comic strips for grown-ups. The magazine is, now more than ever before, a watering hole for these artists, regardless of publisher. It is therefore also the perfect starting point for a collective exhibition.

Put together by Galago’s editor Mats Jonsson and hung by Galago’s cultural editor Johannes Klenell, “Through a Panel Darkly” shows the artwork by 13 Swedish cartoonists, all born in the 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's. The exhibition includes original drawings as well as a number of paintings and objects related to the comics and to the theme of the exhibition - which fits in well with the fact that most of the participants are also artists, sculptors, movie-makers or performance artists.

The center of the exhibition are the three classic Galago artists Joakim Pirinen, Gunnar Lundkvist and Lars Sjunnesson, whose dark but consoling graphics showed the way to a new generation of cartoonists. They represent a rather varied collection of artists, that have gone in many different directions but at the same time have possessed a common characteristic: a fusion of tragedy and comedy.

Parallel to the Galago exhibition, Christer Järeslätt, a photographer and a long time Galago-fan, is showing his unique portraits of the Swedish comic strip artists, including the exhibiting cartoonists. The visitor will also be able to gain more knowledge about Swedish comic strips through seminars and a 200 page catalogue (in English) -"From the shadow of the northern lights" - which contains comic strips by the exhibiting artists as well as other artists working in the same tradition.

Welcome to the world of Galago and Swedish comic strip art!
