Seiji Chokai (1902-1972), born in Hiratsuka in Kanagawa Prefecture, started painting when he was a junior high school student, and participated in the Shunyo-kai exhibition in 1924. Later on, he went to Europe and explored possibilities of oil painting, establishing his unique style of developing thick layers of paint using deep colors on his canvas. He soon became a conspicuous figure in the yo-ga oil painting scene in Japan.
Kotaro Migishi (1903-1934) was born in Sapporo, Hokkaido. He also began painting in junior high school and moved to Tokyo after graduation. His work was selected in the Shunyo-kai exhibition in 1923, and he joined the Independent Art Association as the youngest founding member. He passed away at the age of 31, after pursuing various painting styles in his short 10 years as a painter.
This exhibition introduces works by these two painters: Chokai from the collection of Hiratsuka Museum of Art, and Migishi from the collection of Migishi Kotaro Museum of Art, Hokkaido. Along with their masterpieces, documents relating to their practice are also on display, tracing influences that they received from each other.
