Residential districts on the fringes of cities are born against a backdrop of flourishing trading companies and service industries. They represent an attempt to make changes to the industrial structure of society, the effects of a stagnating economy, and dwindling birth rates. Today's suburbs seem unlikely to expand further in the future; instead, they seem doomed to shrinkage. Using the modern perspective embodied by the camera, Imura hopes to be able to capture the reality and beauty of today's outlying urban areas, built during Japan's period of high economic growth.
