"From Jakuchu to the Kano School - The Flourishing Art of the 18th Century" Exhibition
This event has ended.
At Shizuoka Prefectural Museum of Art
Media: Painting
The Edo period lasted for more than 250 years, during which time several formidable painters came to prominence, especially in the 18th century, contributing to a golden age in the visual arts.
Jakuchu, Oukyo, Rosetsu, Daiga and Shohaku were all major figures belonging to this elite Edo coterie of artists, and who have in recent years come to be much appreciated by the public. The Kano school, however, has a rather stiff and formal reputation, in stark opposition to the aforementioned artists, but even the masterworks of the Kano school were produced out of a solid grounding in a similar technique.
This exhibition introduces work by the representative painters of 18th century Japan, from Jakuchu up to the Kano school.
