Saskia Olde Wolbers Exhibition
Closes in 15 days
At Ota Fine Arts
Media: Video installation
Ota Fine Arts' second exhibition since its relocation will be a new work by Dutch video artist Saskia Olde Wolbers entitled "Deadline". Her past two works will be on display at the same time at the Mori Art Museum.
Wolbers was born in 1971 in Holland and is now based in London. She received the Baloise Prize at the Basel Art Fair in 2003, and the Beck's Future Prize the following year, continued validation of her work at the very forefront of the field of video art.
"Deadline" continues the Wolbers trops of filming symbolic and metaphoric objects in a dense manner, layering the images with a narrative originating in distant Africa. The story traces the family trajectory of a father and uncle of a pair of twins over a period of more than a century, blurring the outlines between past and present in this temporal illusion. Wolbers' video is an invitation to a magical, unstable reality triggered by a simple narrative action while on a roadtrip.
The video images were created painstakingly using lifelike models that were then combined with writing and filmed in a studio. All the models used were handcrafted, but the narration itself has the feel of an enchanted spell, creating a fantastical space-time where truth and lie form curious narrative mixture.
"Deadline" premiered last fall in London, after which it was shown in Toronto. This is the first stop on its Asian tour.
