After the arrival of the black ships of Commodore Perry, Japan opened its door to the world and numerous people from overseas visited the nation. From the end of the Edo to the beginning of Meiji period, photographers from all over the world took photographs of landscapes and customs throughout Japan, recording their personal experiences. Such works were called "Yokohama photographs" and sold as souvenir items for the foreigners going back to their respective countries. Gorgeous maki-e lacquer work decorates the cover of the photo book, while most photos on the mounts bound in it are printed on albumen papers onto which slight colorings are applied afterwords. On view in this exhibition are approximately 40 photographs from the book. This exhibition also introduces the history of Japanese photography along with photographs taken back then.
