Kinuyo Tanaka is unparalleled even among the most famous stars in Japanese film history - her career as a film star lasted from childhood right until her last years. Born in 1909, she was heralded as a national icon at the tender age of 13. She has worked with the most prominent Japanese directors of her time, such as Kenji Mizoguchi and Yasujiro Ozu, and her legendary performance in her last film was shot in the same year that she passed away. She is also remembered as the first prominent female director in Japan.
The Film Center dedicated its first exhibition on an actress to Kinuyo Tanaka just after its opening in 1971, and continues to harbor a special affinity for the actress. This exhibition will present articles left behind by Tanaka, as well as other documents that trace the footsteps of this unique actress.
