At the beginning of November, the French Embassy relocated to a new annex constructed on the same premises. Before the old wing is demolished, the Embassy is holding an exhibition which acts as a platform for cultural exchange between Japan and France. This is the very last opportunity for visitors to visit the old building.
Entitled "No Man's Land", the exhibition showcases various works of art in every possible location of the building: offices, hallways, reference rooms, staircases, basement and courtyard. On view in those spaces will be wall paintings and sculptural pieces made of demolition waste, made possible on this special occasion. Most of the work will be produced onsite: some artists will turn the exhibition sites into their ateliers, providing a new form of communication between the viewer and art through their creative activities.
Over 70 participants include both internationally renowned and emerging French and Japanese artists, as well as art students from both nations. The running of the event will be made possible through collaborative efforts between companies, schools and NPOs.
By opening the entire site to the public at no charge, this program aims to offer an open environment for a general audience. A wide variety of events, including cafeteria, bookstore and educational workshops targeted at kids, are also planned.

この【元】大使館は、もはやその元々の機能や性質を剥奪されて、いやそこから解放されて、アーティストの自由なキャンバスに変化している、誰からも解放されて誰にも解放されている、すなわちそこは誰にも属さないNO MAN'S LANDなのか、という解釈。

1月23日(土) 24日(日)、No Man's Land会場にて、 「枯山水サラウンディング×KENZOKI」光と音と香りのコラボレーションアートプロジェクトを実施します。
計11台のスピーカーによるマルチチャンネル立体音響の神秘的で重厚な音とのハーモニーを体感ください。
場所： フランス大使館旧庁舎、中庭日本式庭園、101号室。
また、中庭日本式庭園にてライブを予定しています。

アーティストたちは開け放たれた部屋で和やかに過ごし、観客のために作品を見せ話してくれたり、和やかムード満点でした。皆がフレンドリーで優しくて私はこんな芸術家たちが大好きです。
私もこんなふうにただ絵を描くために絵が描けたらいいなーと思います。
2009年末にいってきました。長く廊下が続き、たくさんある小さな部屋に作品がつまっています。絵画や映像、インスタレーションなど、多様な・多くの作品があるのでゆっくりと時間をかけて見て回ってみては。不思議と心が落ち着きます。
表現が建物を飲み込んでいた。。
