Teppei Kaneuji "Melting City, Empty Forest"

Artists

Teppei Kaneuji
This is the first large scale solo exhibition of up-and-coming young artist Teppei Kaneuji, held at the Yokohama Museum of Art.

Kaneuji's works include "sculptures" that look like pillars of ice with white sap trickling down their sides and "paintings" composed of lines that delineate a sprawling white map of an imaginary continent on an entire wall. These challenging visual riddles upset the boundaries between immobile and ambulatory objects, and challenge definitions of substances and their illusory or phantom equivalents.

These pieces are created using techniques of collage and bricolage, cutting and pasting or assembling bits and pieces to form a hodgepodge. Using magazine cuttings, plastic items, scrap wood and other readily available materials, Kaneuji creates hitherto unknown forms and shapes - cream-like sculptures that threaten to flow away at any moment, or installations that resemble anatomical samples of newly discovered organisms. His work gives viewers a enjoyable thrill similar to that of childhood games, or else a sense of wholesome excitement that coexists with an intellectual association, evoking sophisticated, composite impressions.

This exhibition showcases a total of 120 pieces, concentrating on new works and massive installations measuring more than 10 meters, and also features Kaneuji's first attempt at animation in the form of a large scale video installation. Viewers will be able to venture into a dynamic exhibition space that resembles a thriving, vital city or forest made up of pure white spaces and a surfeit of riotously colorful objects in equal measure. In addition, events and performances are scheduled over the duration of the exhibition that will introduce audiences to the rich color, form and musical sense of rhythm of Kaneuji's unique oeuvre.
