Seiichi Niikuni
Poetry is commonly understood as a literary genre but it has undeniable association with art and music given the consideration of the spacing of words on paper and the importance that is given to recitation. Concrete Poetry was a movement that rose in the 50s that sought to explore such visual and musical potentials of poetry. Developments in printing technology and the diversification of typography helped the movement grow and despite its end as an international movement in the 70s, its influence continues to live on in the world of graphic design. It is not surprising therefore that there is a revival in interest in the experimental spirit of a crucial movement in the history of modern poetry.

Seiichi Niikuni (1925-77) was a prominent figure in the Concrete Poetry movement in Japan who was active for a short but extremely intense period in which he not only continued his radical experiments but also set up association and magazines and got involved in exhibitions and events internationally.
Since his death in 1977 at the young age of 52 years old, his name was long forgotten and no attempts at reconsidering his life work have been made.

This exhibition will present the documents that have been donated to the museum by his wife and will display the work of the poet who was not simply the forerunner of concrete poetry but also opened new possibilities in the earnest cultural environment in Japan.
