Naoki Tsuruta has been expanding the scope of his activities to cover fashion, photo books, magazines, CD jackets, advertising and more. His masterful technique, as shown in his portrait series of Japanese actresses featured over 3 years in the pages of Invitation magazine since its inaugural issue, has constantly earned him a winning reputation. Tsuruta's new photo book "19 Rooms" includes material based on this series, as well as newly-shot works.

With recent improvements in portable technology, the volume of portrait photography that tries to capture a sense of head-on intimacy with the subject using handheld snapshot cameras has risen dramatically of late. What Tsuruta tries to do with his photography, however, is to construct a single, delicate instant using his own lighting techniques. All of the shots in "19 Rooms", in particular, were taken indoors, with special attention given to the sense of closeness to the subject, allowing Tsuruta to capture these actresses in a rare moment of privacy in their own "secret room". These photos depict a world of astonishing intimacy and closeness that is possible only with Tsuruta's exquisite craft, as well as the feminine charm that emerges from a private moment with these actresses. What Tsuruta captures here is a new dimension of Japanese celebrity portraits.
