Koichi Hara
The Time Tunnel series puts the spotlight on the younger days of first-rate creators working in various fields. This 29th edition of the exhibition features the work of art director Koichi Hara.

Hara was born in Yokohama in 1946 and grew up surrounded by American army troops and American culture. He enjoyed American and European films as a teenager, and discovered the graphic design profession by chance when his elder brother recommended that he go to see a graduation exhibition held at Kanagawa Technical High School. Impressed, he decided to enroll at this high school.

After graduating from the graphic department of Kanagawa Technical High School, Hara's unofficial offer from a design firm was unfortunately rescinded. Luckily, he managed to find a job with the Ashidate group thanks to an introduction from his brother's friend. Hara then went on to work at Daiichi News Agency, where a senior copywriter invited him to join Asahi News Agency. He soon found himself working on ad campaigns for Japan Tobacco and Suntory, and at the age of 34, received the highest award at the Tokyo ADC awards at 1980 for his Suntory "Spirit" campaign. After winning this award, Hara continued to draw on his bold ideas and the strengths of photography and photocopying techniques to deliver solid, lively advertising campaigns time after time. He also handled many CD jacket designs for bands such as YMO and the Southern All Stars. In 1985, he went freelance, going on to handle growing amounts of editorial work and photography assignments.

This exhibition is Hara's first solo show, featuring a range of work ranging from his early assignments to the most recent projects, held over two venues.
