"Hiraizumi - Pure Land in the Far North-east of Japan" Exhibition
This event has ended.
Hiraizumi, the "capital of the far north", was ruled by a northern branch of the Fujiwara family for four generations over a hundred year period beginning in the late 11th century. The Fujiwara leaders constructed a uniquely beautiful city with a refined culture based on the Jodo philosophy of Mahayana Buddhism. The exhibition will exhibit the eleven Buddhist images from the north altar of the Goldern Hall of Chusonji temple for the first time. It will also show Buddhist images from nearby temples and other treasures from the late Heian period, revealing the radiant cultural heritage of northern Japan centering on Hiraizumi, a city whose influence rivaled that of Kyoto.
