"Artists from Sakura and Boso -New Collection" Exhibition

Sakura City Museum of Art
Finished
Works by Chu Asai (1856-1907) and his contemporaries form a pillar of the museum collection. Last year, the museum acquired new works by Senshu Shiba (1877-1956), who became Asai's first disciple during his last years in Kyoto. Aspiring to develop a new nihonga style, Shiba studied yoga painting at Shogoin Yoga Research Institute whose founders included Asai, and Kansai Bijutsuin, becoming highly respected for his exceptional talent in pencil drawing.

This exhibition introduces a series of figure drawings, landscape sketches and watercolor pieces Shiba produced during his school days. In addition, newly obtained acrylic paintings and copperplate prints by Chu Asai, one of his disciples Eiki Totori (1873-1943), and Netherlands-based Kei Yoshiya (1945-) will be on display.
