This event has ended.

The late 1930s in Japan were a period of turbulent social upheaval that saw a decisive break with the traditional aesthetic values of nihonga painting and the search for new modes of expression. Artists working during this period experimented with abstraction, surrealism and Bauhaus-inspired ideals, producing photograms, crafts and flower arrangements in addition to painting. This exhibition examines this avant-garde nihonga movement from various perspectives and explores the mutual influences that nihonga painters and Western painting circles exerted on each other.
