"Natural History Atlases and Digital Archives I" Exhibition

Musashino Art University Museum & Library
Finished
Europe in the 18th century saw the advent of natural history atlases covering a massive swathe of knowledge that did not fit into existing art historical categories. These publications featured animals, plants, records of ocean voyages, maps, folklore and mythology, dissection diagrams and more, lavishly illustrated and printed using state-of-the-art copperplate engraving and lithograph production techniques. This exhibition features precious natural history atlases from the collection of Hiroshi Aramata in touch-panel format, made possible by the implementation of a digital archiving initiative that hopes to preserve high-resolution images of the pages of these books.
