This event has ended.

Berlin-based visual artist Sarah Illenberger breathes life into stories, creating vivid and humorous images. Her first collection of works, “Sarah Illenberger,” was released by the Berlin publisher Gestalten in 2011 and caught the eye of the globally active creative director Miho Kinomura. Diesel Art Gallery presents Illenberger’s first art exhibition in Japan.

Skillfully using fruits and vegetables, plants, magazine cutouts, metal, textiles, paper, wood, and other simple and familiar materials, Illenberger’s works have a striking sense of pop. Apples are covered in hair, totem poles are made out of diamonds, organs are created from knitted materials, dresses are formed out of vegetables, lighters are sparked with chili peppers, watermelon seeds become rain, pomegranates double as grenades, and lunchbox cups are headphones in these pieces bringing a fresh perspective to everyday items. Her analog photography, art, and graphic designs are both elaborate and nostalgia-inducing, breaking new ground in imagery. This exhibition showcases objects from the “Good Weather” series displayed at Berlin’s Gestalten shop and gallery Gestalten Space in autumn 2011, as well as works from Illenberger’s representative “Strange Fruits,” and footage of a collaboration by Illenberger and Kinomura in Berlin.
