This event has ended.

In celebration of its 15th anniversary, Pola Museum of Art established a brand new space dedicated to introducing contemporary artists looking to explore new possibilities in art. The inaugural exhibition will be a solo show by Sai Hashizume, the title of this exhibition - “Girls start the riot” - taken directly from the title of her early masterpiece “Girls Start the Riot” (2010-2011), which forms part of the series “After Image” (2010-), where she experiments with updating traditional Western paintings.
Following around five years of living in Europe, Hashidume began creating paintings based on Western masterpieces by artists such as Botticelli and Caravaggio, and, most recently, Magritte and Van Gogh. Her depictions of often iconic works are executed with care and precision. This exhibition will trace the trajectory of Hashizume’s painting practice, introducing original works from the “After Image” series, starting with “Girls Start the Riot,” which can be considered as a manifesto of sorts.
