Joji Hashiguchi “Individual – Japan and Japanese People”

Shadai Gallery, Tokyo Institute of Polytechnics
Finished

Artists

Joji Hashiguchi
A selection of works from award-winning portrait photographer Joji Hashiguchi’s major series “Junana-sai no Chizu” (Map of 17), “Father,” “Couple,” “Shoku 1991–1995 Work,” and “Yume” (Dreams). This is the first comprehensive exhibition of these series about Japan and its people. For “Map of 17,” Hashiguchi traveled across Japan photographing 17 year-olds in the places where they live. Documenting Japanese people who have ridden the waves of economic prosperity in the late-1980s through stagnation and decline after the bubble burst, Hashiguchi’s works have renewed value in 2017 as a testament to photography’s ability to reflect and record reality.
