Japanese graphic design culture evolved through the 20th century with its own aesthetics and techniques different from Western design culture. Now in the 21st century, this past has become a rich historical source from which to draw. What directions will Japanese graphic design take in the years to come? What possibilities will emerge? An understanding of the past is indispensible when considering these questions. With the cooperation of Idea, Seibundo Shinkosha’s magazine reporting from the front lines of international graphic design since 1953, this exhibition gives an overview of 20th century Japanese graphic design from the perspectives of 20th century leaders in the field. Notable ideas, works, people, and events are introduced.
