Born 1903 in Aomori Prefecture, Shikou Munakata left for Tokyo at 21 with the aim of being an oil painter but instead pursued woodblock printing. He would go on to become one of Japan’s most renown woodblock printmakers, receiving awards at the 3rd Sao Paolo Biennale in 1955 and at the 28th Venice Biennale the following year. This exhibition presents the breadth of his life and work.
